So like many artists, I too have a Patreon, as many of you probably know already. I don’t really enjoy advertising, I don’t like pimping my own stuff, and I don’t like begging for money. But I’m writing this because I’m not making enough to live on with the comics running. I want to work on the comics without worrying about any income coming in for it, it’s a labor of one and one that I enjoy. Unfortunately, it’s not realistic for me to continue working on the comics in conjunction with other work. It has me stressing out with 12-16hr workdays that basically leave me burnt out and exhausted. As much as I’d rather dump my extra work and focus totally on the comics, I don’t bring in enough money from the comics to allow for that.
In essence, I’ve pretty much been working on crumbs and fumes and something has to give. So despite my best efforts, the comics are going to end up getting put on the back burner for real paying work.
If everyone that reads the comics, that is not currently donating, only donated $1 – I would have enough money to dedicate to the comics full time. That’s it, just a dollar. I feel like I’m in one of those starving kids ads where you can donate the amount for a ‘cup of coffee’.
If I don’t get more donations in, then I might have to drop BT again, and cut Kaerwyn down to 2-3 comics per week. It is an unfortunate reality, but it is the reality I’m looking at. I’m going to try to at least keep Kaerwyn running with 3 comics per week.
For those of you interested in the hard numbers, I spent an average of 6hrs on the comic pages. That’s five comic pages per week, at 6hrs each, means I work 30hrs on the comics. So in order to make just minimum wage on the comics, I would need to make $300/wk. With Patreon’s current donations, I actually make less than $150 a week. I’m working on less than half minimum wage. But this is a labor of love and something I would do without money if I could. In the early days of BT, my husband allowed me to stay at home and work on the comics, and anything that came in donation wise would be great – but it was not a living wage. My husband passed away some years ago and I’ve been trying to make it on my own – which I can’t do with the comics alone.
Doing the comics + other work is proving detrimental for me. The comics aren’t getting finished in time. They’re looking worse as time goes on. I’m getting some extreme burnout. And I think it’s making my other work suffer. More than anything, I’d love to just do the comics, period. But it’s not realistic or feasible for me.
Sorry for making this a really long whine.
Here’s what I’m thinking about changing the current Patreon goals to:
No Goals – Kaerwyn will still update 3 times a week.
$200/month goal – Character AMA Once or maybe Twice a month depending on how popular they are.
$500/month goal – One Patron will win a free adoptable from my available adoptables.
$600/month goal – 1 BT per week.
$800/month goal – Commission Raffle. I’m still waiting to hear from Patreon about this, but apparently “random prizes to a patron” are okay. But raffles are not. I think I can get away with giving a free prize to a random patron without Patreon getting pissed.
$1000/month goal – 4 Kaerwyns per week.
$1200/month goal – 2 BT’s per week.
Keep in mind that the above might sound like a lot, but it’s still less than minimum wage per hours worked after issues with cards being declined and Patreon taking their cut.
So if you decide to donate, what do you get out of it? Well if enough people donate, you’ll get 4 Kaerwyn’s a week. Might be able to get more than 1 BT a week. If enough people donate, I could focus on nothing but the comics.
Realistically, however, what you get from it is supporting me so that I can at least keep 3 Kaerwyns and 1 BT running.
-You’ll also get to see them earlier. I try to post the comics 1 day ahead of the public uploads.
-I’d like to start posting some Character AMA’s on Patreon and the donator forum.
-I want to start a raffle or at least a prize giveaway (Depending on Patreon’s raffle rules) for all donators to get a chance to win a free colored sketch commission per month.
-A free adoptable per month for a lucky winner.
-I want to start working on Guides, Info and tutorials on various things such as how to draw TF art, worldbuilding, character development/building, story creation, RPing, and anthropomorphic creatures in art and literature.
Interested in any of this? Help me out. I could really use it. Don’t be ashamed of giving “just a dollar”. Those dollars go a long ways and can really help me out. https://www.patreon.com/Jakkal If you don’t like Patreon, there is always paypal. I may have a google wallet set up soon as well.
Thank you guys for watching and reading the comics. I’m glad people enjoy them. If you can’t afford to donate, then word of mouth really goes a long ways as well.
TLDR; Kaerwyn doesn’t pay the bills so it’s getting dropped to 3 times a week unless, magically, I get more donators.
